Brooklyn Microgrid
LO3 Energy set out to rethink how communities use energy — letting neighbors buy and sell solar power directly through blockchain. RSM designed and developed the mobile app that brought this concept to life — translating technical complexity into a beautiful, real-time interface for everyday users.

The Challenge
Make peer-to-peer, blockchain-based energy trading accessible to everyday users through a mobile app.
Brooklyn Microgrid aimed to disrupt how we interact with energy: replacing top-down utilities with local trading networks powered by blockchain. Participants would generate excess solar energy and sell it directly to neighbors — all tracked, verified, and transacted on-chain.
But the back end was only part of the system. To work in the real world, the platform needed a mobile interface that could surface real-time data, support transactions, and make users feel confident and engaged. LO3 turned to RSM to bring that vision to life.
requirements

what we did
Intuitive MOBILE FIRST Design
Crafted mobile UI for iOS and Android, focused on approachability and clarity
Live Energy Tracking
Map-based dashboard showing real-time local generation, usage, and impact
Secure DISTRIBUTED Transactions
Integrated with blockchain APIs to enable peer-to-peer energy trades
Reusable Architecture
App development supported replication and localization for additional markets
Stakeholder-Ready
Created a high-fidelity product that became the visual centerpiece of LO3’s platform and mission
The Outcome
The Brooklyn Microgrid app served as a pioneering proof of concept for decentralized, peer-to-peer energy markets. It became the flagship demo for LO3’s Exergy platform — helping to build momentum and visibility for local energy trading as a viable model.
